For Yvonne and Roger Puckett, popular Nia and Zumba instructors at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, bringing these forms of dance to others has not only allowed them to share their love of movement, but keep young too. And, at 81 and 82 years old, respectively, that’s not a bad thing.

These butt-kicking senior trainers are getting their peers in shape

The couple, who have been married for 50 years, teach classes at the McBurney YMCA on West 14th Street. Between them, they’ve worked alongside Bob Fosse and Elvis Presley and have danced in movies and shows both on Broadway and off.

Puckett says he has been focusing more on more on getting back to dancing and physical movement. “I've enjoyed every minute of [working at the shop],” the Manhattan resident said, ”but it’s become difficult to do both.” Puckett, who stayed on at the gallery as its master framer, is planning to teach movement for seniors at the YMCA on 14th Street in Manhattan, and several New York senior centers.

In the soaring, bustling hangar that is the Chelsea Piers Sports Center, I pegged Miss Puckett at first sight: a warm pixieish Carol Burnett type in boysenberry cargo pants and black-sequined sneakers. I gushily introduced myself, and asked, “Do you think Fred Astaire would have embraced Zumba?” She said, “Oh, definitely, as all dancers would.”
